How Mental Health Counseling & Neurobehavioral Therapy Can Benefit Patients

When you are struggling managing your symptoms of trauma or chronic illness
Many adults and children struggle with mental health issues, past or recent trauma, or stressors managing life with chronic illness. Some children and adults experience difficulty navigating neurobehavioral or neurocognitive disorders. We are here to help you identify how your unique experiences may impact your behavior, cognition, and mental health. The goal is to provide counseling and education to help patients identify how their individual symptoms may be impacting their relationships, career or school success, and overall quality of life. We use a neuroscience perspective and work with patients to identify and educate on ways in which the brain impacts mental health, behavior, and cognition.

The Brain's Impact on Mental Health & Behavior

Why Learning to Understand Your Brain Can Help You
The brain is complex, but can be used to our advantage if we learn to better understand the way our own brains work. Many individuals may not realize the ways in which mental health and behavior is impacted by their brain. We specialize in providing counseling that incorporates knowledge of neuroplasticity to help patients address mental health issues, improve behavior, stress response and cognition.
  • Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to rewire, or adapt, over the lifetime. Neuroimaging has proven that the thoughts and behaviors patients learn in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) modify the brain's neural circuits (AAN, 2023).
  • Research studies have shown that the parts of the brain responsible for processing emotions were more interconnected after Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AAN, 2023).
  • Neuroimaging studies indicated that the skills taught in CBT for depression appeared to cause positive changes to the same areas of the brain that are modified by common antidepressants, (AAN, 2023).

A NEUROscience PERSPECTIVE & Why It Helps Patients in Mental Health Counseling

  • WHAT IS A NEUROscience PERSPECTIVE
-A neuroscience perspective is an approach that views behavior from the perspective of the brain, the nervous system, and biological functioning. -This perspective emphasizes that the internal aspects of an individual have a greater impact on their thoughts, emotions, and behavior than external factors.
    MORE BENEFITS OF COUNSELING
-Counseling helps patients with chronic neurological disorders identify and address mental health, cognitive and behavioral issues, improve functioning, and learn coping techniques to manage emotions around their illness. -Cognitive Behavioral Therapy improves functioning and reduces anxiety and depression in children and adults with neurobehavioral conditions, such as ADHD.
